Witch's Broomsticks for kids: the whole recipe

Let's make witch's broomsticks you can eat, bristles and all! This easy Halloween treat is for ages 5 to 9 (grades Kโ€“3rd), takes about 10 minutes and serves 2. Crumb, our tiny chef, reads every step aloud with a picture, so a child can follow along.

Ingredients

  • 2 sticks of string cheese
  • 6 pretzel sticks (or gluten-free pretzel sticks)
  • 6 chives (optional)

Tools

A cutting board, A butter knife, A plate.

Steps

  1. Wash your hands with soap for twenty seconds.
  2. Cut 2 sticks of string cheese into three short pieces each, with a butter knife.
  3. Pull the bottom of each piece apart into thin strings: the broom's bristles!
  4. Push 6 pretzel sticks into the tops, one in each: the handles.
  5. Tie 6 chives round the tops, one on each broom, like string.
  6. Lay your brooms on a plate and fly them to your mouth. Whoosh!

Safety notes

  • Contains milk, wheat. Tap "Allergies?" on the Kitchen's front page and the swaps fill themselves in where there is one.
  • Pull cheese into thin strips, not chunks, for little ones under 4.
  • Read the label on packets for allergies.

Make it your own

  • Use a carrot stick or a celery stick for the handle.
  • Make a broom closet: a whole row of brooms.
  • Try a cheddar stick for orange bristles.
