Pooh and Piglet Go Hunting: the full story
Part One · The Tracks
Piglet lived in a very grand house in the middle of a beech tree. Next to his door stood a broken sign that said TRESPASSERS W. Piglet said it was his grandfather's name. One snowy winter morning he was sweeping the snow from his doorstep. He looked up, and there was Pooh.
Pooh was walking round and round in a circle, thinking about something else. "What are you doing?" asked Piglet. "Hunting," said Pooh mysteriously. "Hunting what?" "That is just what I ask myself, and I shall know when I catch up with it. Now, what do you see here?"
"Tracks," said Piglet, and he gave a little squeak. "Paw-marks! Oh, Pooh, do you think it is a Woozle?" "It may be," said Pooh. "You never can tell with paw-marks." Then he stopped. "There are two animals now. Would you come with me, Piglet, in case they are Hostile Animals?"
Piglet scratched his ear and said that he had nothing to do until Friday. So off they went together, round and round a clump of larch trees. As they walked, Piglet told Pooh about his grandfather, and Pooh wondered if he could take a grandfather home to keep.
Part Two · More and More Woozles
Suddenly Pooh stopped and pointed. "Look! A third animal has joined the other two!" "Is it another Woozle?" asked Piglet. "No, it makes different marks," said Pooh. "Perhaps it is two Woozles and a Wizzle, or two Wizzles and a Woozle. Let us go on following them."
They went on, feeling a little worried now. Then Pooh stopped again and licked the tip of his nose to cool it, because he was hotter and more anxious than ever before. There were four animals now! The tracks crossed over each other and got tangled together.
"I think," said Piglet, licking his own nose, "that I have just remembered something. I forgot to do it yesterday, and I cannot do it tomorrow, so I really ought to go back and do it now." "I will come with you," said Pooh. "It is a morning sort of thing," said Piglet quickly.
Just then they heard a whistle from the branches of a big oak tree, and there was Christopher Robin! "Ah, then you will be all right," said Piglet. "You will be quite safe with him. Goodbye!" And he trotted home as fast as he could, very glad to be out of all danger again.
Part Three · The Silly Old Bear
Christopher Robin climbed slowly down his tree. "Silly old Bear, what were you doing?" he asked. "First you went twice round the trees by yourself. Then Piglet ran after you, and you went round again together, and you were just starting a fourth time." "Wait a moment," said Pooh, and he held up a paw.
He sat down and thought in the most thoughtful way that he could. Then he fitted his paw into one of the tracks, and scratched his nose twice, and stood up. The tracks were exactly the size and shape of his own paw! "I see now," said Pooh.
"I have been Foolish and Deluded," said Pooh, "and I am a Bear of No Brain at All." "You are the best bear in all the world," said Christopher Robin softly. "Am I?" asked Pooh hopefully. Then he cheered up. "Anyhow, it is nearly lunchtime," he said, and off he went to eat it.
