A free AI learning tool for kids
Stories at their reading level, word practice, math and learning games, from pre-readers to 8th grade. No sign-up, no ads, free through 2026.
What it is
Peabody (peabody.kids) is a free AI-driven adaptive learning platform for kids that teaches reading, math facts and facts about the world through play. More than twenty real games carry the learning question inside the game world; AI writes stories at the child's measured reading level; a practice brain (plain code, not AI) climbs a mastery ladder per subject and never asks a question again once it is right. It works from pre-readers to about 8th grade, needs no sign-up, and is free through the end of 2026. The rules and the research behind them are on the science page.
Start free or read a story first.
Five things a child can do
1. Read stories at their level
Peabody's free library runs from Pre-K to 8th grade, each story marked with its reading level and how spooky it is. Start at the level that feels comfortable and move up. Every level has its own page, like free stories by reading level.
2. Make their own AI story
Tap a few ideas, pick a mood, and Peabody writes a story at their level with a few practice words inside. See the free AI story generator for kids.
3. Practise the words
The practice words from each story come back, spaced out over days, with the ones a child misses most coming first. How Peabody keeps track of words.
4. Practise math
Fractions, times tables, signed numbers and more, in short parts of ten questions. Times tables get a heat grid that shows which facts are slow. See free times tables practice.
5. Play learning games
Short games where the way forward is the right answer: Dip & Dash, Rocket Number Blast, Peabody Rush, Deep Dig, Potion Shop, Critter Farm, Dino Dash, Astro Rescue, Temple Escape, Cell Break, Last Word, Choose Your Own Adventure, Doomcrawl, Stone Age, Onslaught, Invasion, Sniper, Build World, Number Line Run, Number Trails, Whack, Pop, Odd One Out, Merge, Stack, Slice, Snake, Flappy Peabody, Match Three, Memory, Ten Tiles. Every answer is three tap-boxes, with no typing. Browse them all in the games hub.
What it tracks, and what it never does
Peabody tracks which practice words your child has met, which they miss, how they feel about a story's difficulty (too easy, too hard) and which times-table facts are slow. It uses that to pick what comes next.
It does not diagnose reading or learning problems, measure reading fluency (it never listens to a child), give a Lexile score or compare a child to grade norms. If you are worried about your child's reading, talk to their teacher. Read more in where is my child stuck.
Why it is built the way it is
- Short and often. Peabody is made for ten good minutes a day, not a weekend catch-up. See little and often reading.
- The child chooses. Stories start from the child's own ideas, which is the best reason to read to the end.
- Honest rewards. There is a small island and some earned looks. There are no leaderboards, loot boxes or countdown timers.
- Private. No ads, no tracking, no real names sent to the AI. See how Peabody keeps kids private without an account.
For teachers and homeschoolers
Peabody has no classroom product yet, and there is nothing to buy. Many teachers suggest it as free home practice because there is no sign-up for a child to forget. There is a guide for teachers.
Free tools that teach kids about AI
Peabody uses AI to write stories; it doesn't teach how AI works. For that, these free tools let a child train a small AI and see where it goes wrong. None of them is ours:
- Teachable Machine for kids: teach the webcam two toys in ten minutes
- AI for Oceans, level by level: Code.org's one-hour activity
- Machine Learning for Kids: train a model, then build a Scratch game with it
- Google's free AI games for kids and AI or human? games
- Hour of AI at home: a one-hour plan by age for 7 to 11 December 2026
- Where to learn about AI: about seventy free sites, checked
Questions parents ask
Is Peabody really a free AI learning tool for kids?
Yes. It is free through 31 December 2026, with no ads, no card and no sign-up to start.
What does it teach?
Reading (stories at your child's level and vocabulary practice) and math (fractions, times tables, signed numbers and more, by grade), with learning games that practise both.
Is it an AI tutor?
Not in the chat-with-a-robot sense. AI writes the stories; the practice, spacing and levels are plain code you can describe in a sentence. It is a practice tool, not a replacement for a teacher.
What grades does it cover?
Reading from Pre-K to about 8th grade. Math starts at counting and goes through 7th grade topics, with more by grade being added.
Is it safe?
Peabody was designed child-first: no ads, no tracking, no open chat with an AI, ideas screened before the AI sees them, and a child's real name is never sent to the AI. See is AI safe for kids.
Does it work on a phone or tablet?
Yes, in any browser. There is nothing to install.
Will it replace reading with my child?
No, and it is better with you. Many families use it at bedtime, with the child reading aloud. See read aloud to someone.
