12 AI toys for toddlers and preschoolers, and what to check first
Toddlers and preschoolers are the age group AI toy makers are targeting hardest, and the one we are most careful with. Young children trust a voice that talks back, cannot tell a script from a chatbot, and share everything. So this honest list starts with screen-free, no-microphone options that are simply good for small kids, then covers talking devices you can use carefully, and ends with the chatbot plush toys we would skip for now. Before buying any toy that talks, test it yourself and read who hears what your child says.
We favored screen-free toys with no microphone, then talking devices with real parent controls; chatbot toys are included only with clear warnings drawn from 2025-2026 testing by PIRG and NBC News. Prices were checked on the makers' own sites in October 2026 and move often, especially around holiday sales. Checked 2026-10-24. Nobody paid to be here and nothing is an affiliate link.
Yoto Player (4th Gen)
Yoto · $150 (Oct 2026; pre-order, ships from Nov. 2) · Ages 3+
Kids push in a card to hear a story or song. The new model adds a day/night mode and a twist button. No voice assistant, no chatbot.
Watch for: Cards cost extra. Yoto Club is optional.
Toniebox 2
tonies · $150 starter set (Oct 2026) · Ages 3+
A squishy cube that plays audio when a character figure sits on top. Toddlers can run it alone. The newer model adds simple game cards.
Watch for: Figures cost about $20 each.
Yoto Mini (2024 Edition)
Yoto · $80 (Oct 2026) · Ages 3+
The smaller, cheaper Yoto, with the same card system and no voice assistant. Good for car rides and as a first audio player a preschooler can run alone, with parent controls in the app.
Cubetto+
Primo Toys · Ages 3+
A wooden robot coded with blocks, built for ages 3 and up. It teaches "the robot does exactly what you tell it" without a screen.
MatataStudio Tale-Bot Pro
MatataStudio · about $100 (Oct 2026) · Ages Pre-K+
Kids press arrows on the robot's back to plan its route across colorful story maps, then watch it go. It is early coding with no app and no screen, made for the youngest planners.
KIBO
KinderLab Robotics · Ages 4-7
Wooden code blocks, a robot to decorate, and a big focus on storytelling. Designed for pre-K to early elementary, it lets small kids program by arranging blocks and scanning them, with no screen at all.
Sphero indi
Sphero · $150 (Oct 2026) · Ages 4+
A robot car that obeys colored tiles laid on the floor. It shows a preschooler that a machine senses something, then acts on it, which is a good first idea of how smart devices work.
Magna-Tiles
Magna-Tiles · Ages 3+
Not AI at all, and that's the point. Spatial reasoning, building and pretend play are the foundations small kids need before any screen, and these tiles last for years and survive siblings.
Lovevery Play Kits
Lovevery · Ages 0-5
Stage-based toy boxes from birth through early childhood, each built around a developmental goal. It is a subscription, but a screen-free one, with guides that explain why each toy fits the age.
Watch for: Subscription; skip or pause boxes you do not need.
Echo Dot Kids (with Alexa+)
Amazon · Ages 5+ with a parent nearby
A kid-profile speaker that now advertises Alexa+ conversations and co-created stories, with a mic-off button and a parent dashboard. It can be lovely for songs and stories, if a grown-up stays close by.
Watch for: It records voices. Amazon paid $25 million in 2023 over keeping kids' Alexa recordings. Review and delete history.
Miko Mini
Miko · $149 (Oct 2026) · Ages 5+
A small talking robot marketed for young kids, with games, stories and chat. If you buy one, keep it in a shared room, turn on every control, and listen to a few of its conversations yourself.
Watch for: Chat-style replies; usage limits need paid Miko Max; senators flagged an exposed reply database in Feb. 2026.
Curio plush (Gabbo, Grem and friends)
Curio Interactive · $119 each (Oct 2026) · Ages 3+ per maker
Soft plush characters with a voice chatbot inside. In PIRG's 2025 tests Curio's Grok often redirected kids to an adult, which was better than most, but a chatbot is still unscripted.
Watch for: Needs Wi-Fi. A chatbot in a cuddly toy is the category we would wait on for preschoolers.
