The plagiarism and AI-writing checker many secondary schools and colleges use. Students submit essays through their school's learning system, and Turnitin reports text that matches other sources plus the share it thinks was written by AI, paraphrased by AI or run through a humanizer. Feedback Studio adds grading and comments, and the newer Clarity product gives students a writing space that records the writing process. Families meet it only through a school.
Our take: Families cannot choose it, but should know how it works: an AI score is a reason for a conversation, and students should keep drafts and version history.
| Ages it suits | about 11-18 and college (secondary and higher education) |
|---|---|
| What its terms say about age | There is no personal sign-up; students use it through a school. For students under 13, or under the local age of consent, Turnitin relies on the school to get verifiable parent consent. Its public websites are not meant for children under 13. (terms) |
| Price | Through schools. School and institution licenses only; pricing not public (Oct 2026). |

| The AI in it | Detects likely AI-written or AI-paraphrased text and uses AI to support grading and feedback. |
What's good
- Shows students the matching sources, not just a score
- Process recording in Clarity can protect honest writers
- Schools handle consent and contracts
- Publishes its own false-positive testing
Watch for
- AI scores can be wrong and lead to accusations
- Records keystrokes and writing process
- De-identified student work can train its AI
- Students cannot opt out on their own
Data and privacy
The services privacy policy says Turnitin collects student names, emails, submissions and writing-process data such as keystrokes and deletions, does not sell personal information, and may use de-identified student data to build and improve its AI models for writing and detection. Does it work?
A 2023 study of 14 detection tools including Turnitin (Weber-Wulff and others, International Journal for Educational Integrity) concluded the tools are neither accurate nor reliable. Turnitin cites other research rating it highly accurate and reports false-positive rates of about 1.4% for English learners and 1.3% for native speakers in its own tests.

A screening tool for adults, not proof of cheating; a family facing an accusation based on it should ask for the writing history and a conversation, not a number.
