The Bean in the Cup: a free printable book

Print The Bean in the Cup as a little book to cut and staple, or as one page to read together. Every page has its picture, and the words are the ones in the story. Free, with no sign-up.

When your child gets stuck on a word

  1. Look for parts you know.
  2. Sound it out: say each sound, left to right, then say the word fast.
  3. Check it. Is it a real word? Does it make sense? Then check the picture.

If it is a word that cannot be sounded out, like the or said, just tell them the word and have them say it, then reread the sentence.

Print on 2 sheets of paper turned sideways (choose landscape in the print window). Cut along the dotted lines, put the little pages in order by their numbers, and staple them on the left.

1

Omar put a bean in a cup.

He gave it a drink of water.

2

He set the cup by the window.

Day one. Nothing came up.

3

Day two. Nothing came up.

"Hello?" Omar said into the cup.

4

Nobody said hello back.

"That bean is a dud," said his sister.

5

Omar looked at the dirt.

The dirt was dry.

6

So he gave it more water.

He set it in the sun.

7

On day five, Omar ran to look.

Up came a little green loop!

8

The next day, it stood up tall.

Two leaves came out like hands.

9

"Not a dud!" said Omar with a grin.

His sister went red.

10

Then she held up her own cup.

It had a little green loop too.

11

"Mine is no dud," she said.
