Cheese Quesadilla for kids: the whole recipe

Let's make a melty, cheesy quesadilla and cut it into wedges! This easy recipe is for ages 7 to 12 (grades 2nd–6th), takes about 15 minutes and serves 2. Crumb, our tiny chef, reads every step aloud with a picture, so a child can follow along, and every hot or sharp step is marked for a grown-up.

Ingredients

  • 2 tortillas (or corn tortilla)
  • ½ cup grated cheddar
  • 2 teaspoons butter (or oil)

Tools

A cutting board, Measuring cups, A frying pan, The stove (grown-up), A flat spatula, A sharp knife (grown-up), A plate.

Steps

  1. Wash your hands with soap for twenty seconds.
  2. Lay 2 tortillas flat on a clean board.
  3. Sprinkle ½ cup of grated cheddar over one half of each, not quite to the edge.
  4. Fold the empty half over the cheese, like closing a book.
  5. Grown-up step: A grown-up warms 2 teaspoons of butter in a pan over medium heat.
  6. Grown-up step: A grown-up cooks it two minutes, flips it, and cooks it two more.
  7. Wait two minutes: melted cheese is very hot.
  8. Grown-up step: A grown-up cuts it in half, then in half again: four wedges!
  9. Share out the wedges and pull one apart: look at that stretch!
