Pancakes for kids: the whole recipe

Let's mix a batter from scratch and watch for the bubbles that tell us when to flip! This easy recipe is for ages 8 to 14 (grades 3rd–8th), takes about 30 minutes and serves 3. Crumb, our tiny chef, reads every step aloud with a picture, so a child can follow along, and every hot or sharp step is marked for a grown-up.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup flour
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1 tablespoon sugar
  • a pinch salt
  • 1 egg
  • ¾ cup milk (or oat milk)
  • 2 tablespoons butter (or oil)
  • ½ cup blueberries (optional)
  • ¼ cup maple syrup (optional)

Tools

A mixing bowl, Measuring cups, Measuring spoons, A whisk or a fork, A big spoon, A frying pan, The stove (grown-up), A flat spatula, A plate.

Steps

  1. Wash your hands with soap for twenty seconds.
  2. Measure 1 cup of flour into a big bowl: spoon it in and scrape the top flat.
  3. Add 2 teaspoons of baking powder, 1 tablespoon of sugar and a pinch of salt, then whisk them together.
  4. In a second bowl, crack 1 egg, then whisk in ¾ cup of milk.
  5. Wash your hands again: raw egg has germs.
  6. Grown-up step: A grown-up melts 2 tablespoons of butter in the pan, then pours it into the egg bowl.
  7. Pour the wet bowl into the dry bowl and stir just until no flour shows.
  8. Gently stir in ½ cup of blueberries.
  9. Grown-up step: A grown-up heats the pan and pours in ¼ cup of batter for each pancake.
  10. Watch for bubbles popping on top: that's the baking powder's gas!
  11. Grown-up step: A grown-up flips each one with a spatula and cooks it one more minute.
  12. Stack them up on a plate, one on top of another.
  13. Drizzle ¼ cup of maple syrup over the top.
  14. Dig in: you made pancakes from scratch!
