13 AI language-learning apps for kids and teens

Speaking is the hard part of learning a language, and it is where AI helps most: speech recognition that hears a child's voice, and chat partners who never get tired of the same question. For little kids, look for games with listening and repeating, not chatbots. For teens, AI conversation practice is a real upgrade, but many of those apps are 13+. A human teacher, a library card, or a grandparent who speaks the language still beats any app.

We weighed speaking practice, age terms, ads and price, and favored apps that suit the age they claim. Checked in October 2026; prices change. Checked 2026-10-24. Nobody paid to be here and nothing is an affiliate link.

  1. Duolingo

Duolingo · Free with ads; paid tiers · Ages 13+ standard account; check terms for under-13

Short daily lessons in dozens of languages that adjust to your child's mistakes. Paid tiers add AI role-play and video calls with a character. Free is enough for most kids.

Watch for: Streaks and leaderboards push daily use hard.

  2. Google Translate Practice

Google · Free · Ages Teens; younger with a parent

A free practice mode in the Translate app that builds listening and speaking scenarios at your level and tracks words learned. Started with Spanish and French.

Watch for: Still in beta; few languages so far.

  3. Lingokids

    Lingokids · Free (3 activities/day); about $14.99/month (Oct 2026) · Ages 2-8

English for preschoolers through games, songs and videos, with a parent area for progress. Built for little kids, not adults. Activities are short and screen-time friendly.

Watch for: Free version is very limited.

  4. Studycat

    Studycat · About $59.99/year (Oct 2026) · Ages About 3-8

Spanish and English games for young kids, with VoicePlay speaking games that react as children say words aloud. Studycat says VoicePlay does not use AI.

  5. Rosetta Stone

Rosetta Stone · Subscription · Ages 8+ with a parent

Immersion lessons with TruAccent speech recognition, which has a special setting for children's voices. Good for a family learning together. Everything is taught in the new language from the start.

  6. Mango Languages

Mango Languages · Often free through your library · Ages Kids with a parent; teens solo

Conversation-based lessons in many languages, with recording to compare pronunciation. Free with a library card at many public libraries. Ask your library for the login.

  7. Babbel

Babbel · Subscription · Ages Teens

Structured lessons with AI speaking practice, including Babbel Speak scenarios with live feedback, in Spanish, French, German, Italian and more. Lessons are short and well organized for a teen with a school class.

  8. Speak

Speakeasy Labs · Subscription · Ages 13+ per the App Store; check terms

An AI tutor built around speaking out loud from the first lesson. Strong for a teen who wants to talk, not tap. Started with English, now offers more languages.

  9. Praktika

    Praktika · Subscription · Ages 13+

AI avatar tutors for conversation practice, mostly English. Praktika says it is for users 13+, with parent permission below that. Avatars make practice feel less awkward for shy teens.

  10. NovaPals by Novakid

Novakid · Ages Kids learning English

Novakid, an online English school for children, added NovaPals in 2026 for AI speaking practice between live lessons with teachers. Practice ties to what kids learned in class.

Watch for: Tied to a paid live-lesson service; check pricing.

  11. Gemini Live

    Google · Free · Ages 13+

Teens can hold a spoken conversation in the language they are learning and ask for corrections. Free on Android and iPhone. Good practice before an oral exam.

Watch for: General chatbot; set the rules first (stay in Spanish, correct me).

  12. Memrise

Memrise · Free tier; subscription · Ages Teens

Vocabulary built from clips of real native speakers, plus AI conversation practice. A good pair with a school class. Hearing real people, not only computer voices, helps with accents.

  13. Gus on the Go

Gus on the Go · Paid app; free lite version · Ages 4-6

No AI here: a gentle vocabulary app for preschoolers with an owl guide, and no ads or tracking. Listed for parents who want the quiet option.
