12 AI tutors for kids, compared (with each one's age rules)

AI tutors sound like a dream: patient, always awake, and cheap. The good ones act like a coach and ask your child to try the next step. The weak ones are answer machines with a friendly face. Age rules matter more than features here, because the general chatbots were not built for children and their terms say so. This list compares the main options in October 2026, from tutors made for kids to the study modes inside the big chatbots, with what each one allows by age.

We compared teaching style (hints versus answers), parent visibility, age terms and price. Terms and prices were checked in October 2026 and change often. Checked 2026-10-24. Nobody paid to be here and nothing is an affiliate link.

  1. Khanmigo

Khan Academy · About $4/month or $44/year for up to 10 kids (Oct 2026) · Ages Kids and teens via a parent account

Built for students on top of Khan Academy's lessons. It will not just give the answer; it nudges with hints. Parents can read every chat and get flagged if something looks unsafe.

Watch for: Parent plan is US-only for now.

  2. Synthesis Tutor

    Synthesis · Family plan about $119/year (Oct 2026) · Ages 5-11

A math-only tutor for young kids that talks, listens and uses on-screen objects to build number sense. Strong at keeping a 6-year-old engaged without a screen full of text.

  3. ChatGPT study mode

OpenAI · Free; paid tiers · Ages 13+; under 18 needs parent consent

Since July 2025, a study mode makes ChatGPT ask questions and check understanding instead of writing answers. Teen accounts get extra filters, and parents can link to set quiet hours.

Watch for: Kids can switch study mode off in one tap. Common Sense Media's Oct 2026 report urged adults-only use.

  4. Gemini Guided Learning

Google · Free; paid tiers · Ages 13+; under 13 only via Family Link

A mode in Gemini that breaks topics into steps, quizzes as it goes, and adds diagrams or videos. Teens can use it on their own account or through school.

Watch for: School accounts have it off until the school turns it on.

  5. Claude learning mode

Anthropic · Free; paid tiers · Ages 18+ only on consumer accounts

Claude's learning style asks guiding questions instead of answering outright. A good fit for parents studying alongside a teen, not for the teen on their own.

Watch for: Not for under-18s on a personal account; some universities offer it to their students.

  6. Microsoft Copilot

Microsoft · Free; paid tiers · Ages 13+ (higher in some countries)

A general assistant that can explain, quiz and summarize. Microsoft sets the minimum age at 13, higher in some countries, and applies extra limits on experimental features.

  7. PinwheelGPT

Pinwheel · Free up to 20 chats/month; about $5.99/month unlimited (Oct 2026) · Ages Kids and tweens with a parent account

A chatbot for kids built on OpenAI models, with filters and a parent dashboard that shows every conversation. Good for a supervised first try at asking an AI questions.

  8. Ello

Ello · Free core; optional paid upgrade · Ages 5-9

A reading tutor that listens as a child reads real books aloud, then helps with the exact sounds they missed. Now offers free daily reading and math activities.

  9. Amira

Amira Learning · Through schools only · Ages K-6 (varies by district)

A research-based reading tutor that listens to kids read in English or Spanish and gives feedback in the moment. It grew out of Carnegie Mellon's Project LISTEN.

Watch for: Families cannot buy it; ask your school if it is offered.

  10. Brainly Tutor

Brainly · Free with ads; Tutor about $29.99/month on the App Store (Oct 2026) · Ages 13+

A homework app with an AI tutor that explains step by step and takes follow-up questions. Useful, but the free tier has ads and the line between help and answers is thin.

Watch for: Answers can be wrong. Easy to copy instead of learn.

  11. NovaPals by Novakid

Novakid · Ages Kids learning English

Novakid, an online English school for children, launched NovaPals in April 2026 for open speaking practice with an AI partner between live lessons. Best for a child already taking Novakid classes.

Watch for: Check the price and age terms in the app; it pairs with a paid live-lesson service.

  12. Praktika

Praktika · Subscription · Ages 13+ (younger with parent permission)

AI avatar tutors for spoken language practice. Praktika says it is designed for users 13 and older, with a parent's permission needed below that. Good for teens who are shy about speaking in class.
