14 AI homework helpers for teens that build understanding

Your teen is already using AI for homework; surveys say most are. The goal now is to steer them toward tools that make them think. The best ones ask questions back, cite their sources, or only answer from the class materials. The worst ones photograph a worksheet and print the answers. This list ranks the main options for 13-18 year olds by how much learning they leave in, with honest notes on age rules, ads, and how easy it is to switch the learning mode off.

We ranked by whether the tool explains and checks understanding, cites sources, and respects teen age terms. Checked in October 2026; terms and prices move. Checked 2026-10-24. Nobody paid to be here and nothing is an affiliate link.

  1. Khanmigo

Khan Academy · About $4/month or $44/year (Oct 2026) · Ages Teens via a parent account

A tutor built for students that will not do the assignment for them. Strong for math, science and essay feedback, and parents can see the chats.

Watch for: The parent plan is only offered in the US.

  2. NotebookLM

Google · Free · Ages 13+ (all ages via school)

Upload the class reading, slides or notes, and it answers only from those sources with citations. It can make study guides, quizzes and audio overviews. Stricter content rules apply under 18.

  3. ChatGPT study mode

OpenAI · Free; paid tiers · Ages 13+; parent consent under 18

Asks what your teen already knows, then guides with questions and quick checks. Teen accounts get extra protections and parents can link to set quiet hours.

Watch for: Easy to turn off. Common Sense Media's Oct 2026 report found some teen guardrails fell short.

  4. Gemini Guided Learning

Google · Free; paid tiers · Ages 13+

Breaks a topic into steps, adds diagrams and videos, and quizzes as it goes. Google says it does not train on chats from school accounts.

  5. Microsoft Copilot

Microsoft · Free; paid tiers · Ages 13+

A general assistant that can explain, summarize and quiz. Minimum age is 13, higher in some countries. Ask it to quiz you on your notes instead of writing answers.

Watch for: Not built as a tutor; ask it to quiz you, not to write for you.

  6. Khan Academy

Khan Academy · Free · Ages All grades

Free lessons and practice in nearly every high school subject. The reliable place to go after an AI explanation that did not quite land. No ads.

  7. Desmos

Desmos · Free · Ages Middle and high school

Free graphing and scientific calculators. Seeing a function move teaches more than any typed explanation. The same calculator is built into the digital SAT, so practicing with it pays off on test day.

  8. Wolfram Alpha

Wolfram Research · Free; Pro for Students about $9.99/month (Oct 2026) · Ages High school

Reliable computation for math, chemistry and physics. Use it to check a result, not to skip the work. Step-by-step solutions need the paid student plan.

  9. Grammarly

Grammarly · Free; paid tiers · Ages 13+ (16+ in the EU)

Flags grammar and clarity problems and explains why. Its AI can also rewrite whole paragraphs, which many schools count as cheating. Use the explanations to learn the rule.

Watch for: Check your school's AI policy before using rewrite features.

  10. Photomath

Google · Free; Plus about $9.99/month (Oct 2026) · Ages Middle and high school

Shows step-by-step solutions to photographed math problems. Helpful for checking work and seeing where a mistake happened. Try the problem first, then compare each step to your own work.

Watch for: Answers first by design. Try before you scan.

  11. Quizlet

Quizlet · Free with ads; Plus subscription · Ages Teens

Flashcards, practice tests and AI study guides made from notes. Its Q-Chat tutor was discontinued in June 2025. Its library of student-made sets covers most high school courses.

  12. Brainly

Brainly · Free with ads; paid plans · Ages 13+

Community answers plus an AI tutor that explains steps and takes follow-up questions. Quality varies. Treat community answers as a hint, not a source, and check them against the textbook.

Watch for: Easy to copy. Verify answers.

  13. Google Lens

Google · Free · Ages 13+ on own Google account

Point the camera at a homework question to get explanations and related lessons. Lens took over the old Socratic app's job in 2025. Free on most phones.

Watch for: Leans toward answers. Better for checking than starting.

  14. Gauth

    ByteDance

One of the most downloaded homework apps. It photographs and solves fast. Listed so you recognize it, not as a pick. Know the name and talk about it.

Watch for: Owned by TikTok's parent company; answer-first; accuracy complaints. We would skip it.
