11 AI story makers and storytelling apps for kids

AI can write a bedtime story starring your child in seconds. That is a nice treat, and also the weakest way to use it. The better use is to make your child the author: they pick the hero, the problem and the ending, and AI helps with pictures, a read-aloud voice or a nudge when they are stuck. This list covers both kinds, plus a couple of non-AI writing tools that kids love. Read generated stories before your child does, especially the pictures.

We favored apps that keep the child in charge of the story, are clear about price, and avoid public sharing. Checked in October 2026; prices change. Checked 2026-10-24. Nobody paid to be here and nothing is an affiliate link.

  1. Gemini Storybook

Google · Free · Ages Parent-run; 13+ on own account

Describe an idea or upload a drawing and Gemini makes a 10-page illustrated book with narration, in many art styles and 45+ languages. You can print it as a PDF.

Watch for: An experiment; pictures can be odd. Preview before story time.

  2. Microsoft Reading Coach

    Microsoft · Free · Ages About 6-13

Kids choose characters and a setting from a curated set, and the AI writes a story at their reading level that they then read aloud. The safest kind of AI story.

  3. Kidgeni

Kidgeni · Free tier; paid from about $99.99/year (Oct 2026) · Ages 5-12

Kids write and illustrate their own stories, comics and books with filtered AI help, inside an account a grown-up controls. No public sharing by default.

  4. Oscar Stories

Oscar · First stories free; then paid · Ages Parent-run, preschool and up

Personalized bedtime stories with your child as the hero, illustrations, and audio narration. Themes like kindness and courage, plus classic-tale worlds. Parents and relatives can add their own characters.

  5. Bedtimestory.ai

    Bedtimestory.ai · Subscription · Ages Parent-run

Parents pick characters, genre, a lesson and an art style, and it writes a custom bedtime story. Quick to use on a tired night. Let your child choose the hero.

  6. Once Upon a Bot

Once Upon a Bot · Free tier; paid plans · Ages 5-12

Kids describe a story and AI drafts an illustrated book to read together. A handy way to turn a dinner-table idea into pages. Has a small free tier.

  7. Animated Drawings

Meta AI Research · Free · Ages All ages (grown-up uploads)

Bring a hand-drawn hero to life with walking, dancing or jumping moves. Pair it with a story your child writes or tells. Kids can record the narration themselves.

  8. Imagine Forest

Imagine Forest · Free tier · Ages Grade school

A story-writing site for kids with prompts, challenges and a book maker. Mostly human-made tools that coach kids to write their own words. A good place to practice writing.

  9. Storybird

Storybird · Subscription · Ages Grade school and up

Kids write stories inspired by professional illustrations. No AI pictures, which is the point: real art, the child's words. Many teachers use it to get reluctant writers started.

  10. Book Creator

Book Creator · Free tier; school plans · Ages 5+

A simple tool for kids to make their own books with text, drawing, audio and video. Many schools already have it. Kids can add their own voice reading each page, and books can be printed or shared privately.

  11. Character.AI Stories

Character.AI · Ages 13+ by terms; no open chat under 18

Since November 2025, under-18s can no longer have open-ended chats here; teens are steered to story and video tools instead. Listed as a warning, not a pick.

Watch for: Built around AI characters and long sessions. We would keep kids off it.
