16 best reading and word games for kids
Reading games work best when they practice one piece of the puzzle: letter sounds, blending, sight words, spelling or vocabulary. This list runs from phonics games for pre-readers to word puzzles that stretch older kids. Some are apps, some are web games, and a few are tabletop games that make spelling social. A good reading game says sounds clearly, does not reward random tapping, and gets out of the way when the child is ready for real books. We note where a subscription or ads come along.
We chose games that line up with how reading is taught (phonics first, then fluency and vocabulary), and checked each page in October 2026. Prices and plans change. Checked 2026-10-24. Nobody paid to be here and nothing is an affiliate link.
