2026 in review

The 8 biggest AI-in-education launches by big companies in 2026

The big AI companies spent 2026 racing into schools. Most of the action was free AI for teachers and new teen versions of chatbots, while kids' own access stayed tangled in age rules. For parents, the key question is who controls the settings: you, your child's school, or the company. This list explains what each launch is, who it is for, and the catch. Remember the age limits: Claude is 18+, ChatGPT is 13+ with parent consent for minors, and Gemini reaches under-13s only through Family Link or school accounts.

We picked launches from large companies that reached many schools or families in 2026, or late-2025 moves that shaped the year. Details were checked against company posts and news in October 2026. Checked 2026-10-24. Nobody paid to be here and nothing is an affiliate link.

  1. ChatGPT for Teens

    OpenAI · Ages 13-17

Launched Aug. 18 for 13- to 17-year-olds. Stricter replies on risky topics, no romantic role-play, parent alerts in some crisis cases, and Study Hours that turn on Study Mode during set times.

Watch for: Common Sense rated it Unacceptable Risk in October; OpenAI disputes it.

  2. Gemini for Education updates

    Google

At January's BETT show Google widened free access to its top Gemini models for schools, added free SAT practice tests, and turned the Classroom homepage into a dashboard for teachers and students.

Watch for: School admins decide what is on; settings vary by district.

  3. Gemini in Classroom for students of all ages

    Google · Ages School age

From Aug. 10 Google began rolling out a student Gemini tab inside Classroom, with prompts tied to assignments, quizzes and flashcards, for any age the school allows.

Watch for: Default-on once Gemini is enabled; younger grades must be opted out by admins.

  4. Claude for Teachers

Anthropic · Free for verified teachers

Launched July 14. Verified U.S. K-12 teachers get a free year of Claude with state standards, curricula and ready-made lesson skills, plus a student-data agreement aimed at FERPA.

Watch for: Teachers only; Claude.ai is for adults 18+, so not for students.

  5. ChatGPT for Teachers expansion

OpenAI · Free for verified teachers

Launched free in November 2025 for verified U.S. K-12 teachers. In August OpenAI added 55 school systems in 20 states and released education plugins for lesson planning.

Watch for: Free period has an end date; check before relying on it.

  6. Microsoft Elevate for Educators

    Microsoft

Announced in January before BETT: a program for teacher training, AI credentials and new AI tools in Microsoft 365 for schools, building on Copilot Chat access for students 13 and older.

Watch for: Student Copilot access depends on the school's license and settings.

  7. LEGO Education Computer Science & AI

    LEGO Education · From $339.95 per kit (Oct 2026) · Ages 5-14

Shipped in April for K-8 classrooms. Kids work in groups of four with bricks, hardware and screen-free lessons to learn how computers and AI make decisions. Replaces the SPIKE line.

Watch for: Sold to schools; about $340 per kit.

  8. Character.AI ends open-ended chat for under-18s

    Character.AI

Late 2025, but it shaped 2026: teens lost free-form chats with characters, keeping only creative tools. It set the pattern Meta followed in January by pausing teen AI characters.

Watch for: Age checks can be dodged; talk about why the rule exists.
