Gale In Context: Elementary is a research database for children in kindergarten to grade 5, used through school and public libraries. Kids search one place for age-appropriate, curriculum-related articles, pictures and simple descriptions on animals, art and music, geography, health, people, plants, science and sports. It includes read-aloud and translation tools, and teachers can share curated resources and primary sources with students. It is meant as a first step in learning to search databases.

Our take: A safe, free-through-the-library place for young kids to start research projects; check your library's website for a login.

What's good

  • Vetted, kid-level sources instead of open web search
  • Read-aloud and translation help
  • Often free through a library

Watch for

  • Access depends on your school or library
  • Teaches searching, not a guided lesson
  • Mostly reading-based

Data and privacy

Cengage's K-12 notice says it will not sell K-12 student data or build student profiles for ads, uses student data only for school purposes, and uses only de-identified data for product development. Access is often by library card with little or no child data. Read the privacy policy.
