i-Ready is a school program for grades K-8 that pairs an adaptive reading and math test (now called i-Ready Inform, formerly the Diagnostic) with online lessons. A child takes the test a few times a year, then works through lessons and games picked for their level, while the teacher sees reports. Schools buy it; families cannot. The maker says the test is meant to get harder until a child misses questions, which it admits can feel frustrating.

Our take: A widely used school tool you will meet through your child's district rather than choose; ask the school how much weekly screen time it assigns and what data it sends.

The facts
Ages it suitsgrades K-8
What its terms say about ageSchool-licensed only; students sign in with logins their school gives them, and the school consents for under-13s under COPPA. The website terms say you must be 13+ to register a website account, which is separate from student use. (terms)
PriceThrough schools. Sold to schools and districts by quote (Oct 2026); the FAQ says families cannot buy it for homeschooling.

The AI in itThe diagnostic adapts question difficulty to each answer and assigns lessons from the results; the maker says it is piloting its SoapBox voice AI for reading with a small opted-in group.

What's good

  • One test places a child and drives their lessons
  • Reading and math in English and Spanish
  • Strong student-data limits: no ads, no selling, no chat between students

Watch for

  • Families cannot buy it or opt into features; the school decides
  • The test is built to get hard enough that kids miss questions, which upsets some children
  • Schools can share sensitive details such as disability and foster status
  • Lesson time is screen time the school sets

Data and privacy

The school shares names, birth dates, gender, grade, and, at its choice, race, lunch status, disability, English-learner and foster or homeless status; i-Ready adds every answer and score. The policy says student data is never used for advertising or sold, research mostly uses de-identified data, and there is no student-to-student contact. Read the privacy policy.

Does it work?

The maker points to studies by third parties it worked with (HumRRO, Johns Hopkins CRRE, NORC) and reviews by Evidence for ESSA and What Works Clearinghouse, saying students who use it as recommended do better than peers; we did not find a fully independent trial on the pages we read.
