Desk research from the maker's own pages. Not yet tried by us. Checked 2026-10-24.
A writing and grammar platform for grades 3-12. Students practice grammar and sentence skills in exercises that can draw on their interests, then write paragraphs and essays with guided steps. Teachers assign work and see reports. Premium adds a full writing curriculum, originality detection, an AI Grading Assistant that scores and comments on essays, and supports for English learners. IXL Learning announced it had bought NoRedInk on October 19, 2026.
Our take: A solid classroom writing tool for grades 3-12; families should watch how IXL's ownership changes the free version.
| Ages it suits | grades 3-12 |
|---|---|
| What its terms say about age | Anyone under the age to sign a contract (often 18) may use it only with consent from a parent, guardian, school or district. Children under 13 give personal information only when signed up through their school, district or teacher with proper consent, though a parent may sign up their own child. (terms) |
| Price | Free, with paid extras. Free version for teachers and students; Premium for schools and districts by quote (not public, Oct 2026). |

| The AI in it | An AI Grading Assistant drafts scores and feedback on essays against rubrics; student names and emails are masked before essays go to outside AI services. |

Data and privacy
NoRedInk says it does not sell student data or show any ads inside the learning apps, though its public website uses ad-targeting cookies. It masks student names and emails before sending essays to outside AI services. Read the privacy policy.
Does it work?
The maker's own claims only, such as an average 6-point gain on the ACT English test and 50% less grading time with its AI assistant.

Google · ages 13+ on a personal account; all ages through school accounts
A strong study aid for teens working from their own readings; younger children should use it only through a school account.

Grammarly
Superhuman (the company formerly called Grammarly) · ages about 13-18 and adults (high school, college)
Useful for teens 13+ who want cleaner writing and will use it as a checker, but parents of kids still learning to write should know how much of the writing it can do for them.
