A free platform of millions of user-made 3D games, from obstacle courses to role-play towns, played on phones, computers, consoles and some VR headsets. Kids make an avatar, join games with other players, and buy items with Robux, the paid virtual currency. Since June 2026 kids 5-8 get Roblox Kids accounts (hand-picked games, chat off) and kids 9-15 get Roblox Select accounts (games up to Moderate). Chat needs an age check.

Our take: Workable for kids whose parent links an account and sets limits; skip for young children if you will not manage chat and spending.

The facts

What its terms say about ageNo minimum age in the terms. Anyone under the age of majority needs a parent or guardian to read and agree to the terms, and the parent is responsible for the child's activity, including purchases. Only adults may buy Robux or subscriptions. Chat needs an age check; 5-8 year olds get Roblox Kids accounts and 9-15 year olds Roblox Select accounts. (terms)

What's good

  • Huge variety of free games to play with friends
  • New age-based Kids and Select accounts with stricter defaults
  • Parent account can set spending limits, screen time, chat and content level
  • Doorway to making games in Roblox Studio

Watch for

  • Chat and friend requests with strangers; age checks are required for chat but not foolproof
  • Constant pressure to spend Robux, which are non-refundable
  • User-made games vary widely in quality and content
  • Multiple state lawsuits over child safety

Data and privacy

Under-13 accounts get stronger privacy settings with personalized ads turned off, and Roblox says it follows COPPA; contextual ads are still shown. Age checks may use a selfie for facial age estimation, which Roblox says it deletes when the check is done. Read the privacy policy.

Does it work?

No independent study of benefit found. Several US states, including Nebraska, Texas, Tennessee and Florida, have sued Roblox over child safety, saying it failed to protect children from predators.
