Roblox Studio is the free Windows and Mac app used to build every Roblox game. Kids place parts, write scripts in the Luau language, and publish games that anyone on Roblox can play. Roblox's education hub offers free lesson plans and a Learning Hub of educational games. An AI Assistant inside Studio can write scripts, build objects and generate 3D models from typed requests. Publishing puts a child's work, and the child, on the main Roblox platform with its chat and purchases.
Our take: Powerful for teens who want to make real games, best with a parent watching account settings; young kids or families wary of open platforms should start with Scratch or MakeCode Arcade.
| Ages it suits | about 10-18 |
|---|---|
| What its terms say about age | Terms: a minor's parent or guardian must read and consent to the terms and is responsible for the child's activity and purchases. Only adults may buy Robux or make real-money transactions. Since January 2026 a facial age check (or ID for 13+) is required to use chat; under-9s need parent consent to chat, and chat is limited to nearby age groups. (terms) |
| Price | Free. Studio and lesson plans are free (Oct 2026). Robux, subscriptions and in-game items cost real money on the main platform. |
| Works on | Windows, Mac, Web |
| Account | The child's own account |
| Ads | Yes |
| In-app purchases | Yes |
| The AI in it | Studio's Assistant uses a large language model to answer questions, write and change scripts, insert assets and generate materials and 3D meshes; Roblox also uses AI to filter chat. |

Data and privacy
Under-13 accounts get stricter privacy settings and no personalized ads (contextual ads still allowed); no personalized ads until 18. The policy says chat and posted content may be used to train its filters, voice recordings may inform training, and selfies for age checks are deleted after processing. Read the privacy policy.
Does it work?
No independent studies of learning with Roblox Studio found; the maker cites its education curriculum and partners. Several US states have sued Roblox over child safety, including Louisiana in August 2025.
