Fundations is a structured phonics and spelling program that schools teach to whole classes from kindergarten through grade 5, with extra small-group intervention for struggling readers in K-3. Children learn letter sounds, decoding, spelling and handwriting in daily 20-30 minute lessons with hands-on, multisensory routines such as tapping out sounds. Teachers can use the FUN HUB platform for digital lessons, student practice and progress data.
Our take: A solid school phonics core for early grades; parents mostly meet it through their child's school.

What's good
- Systematic phonics in line with the science of reading
- Short daily lessons
- Strong independent curriculum review for K-2
Watch for
- Needs trained teachers to work well
- Older federal review found no qualifying studies
- Families can't buy the digital platform
Data and privacy
Collects usage data from students; schools may add name, school, grade, Fundations level and assessment results. Wilson says it shares this only as needed to run the service, such as hosting. Read the privacy policy.
Does it work?
The What Works Clearinghouse found no qualifying studies in 2007 and 2010. EdReports (2026) rated the K-2 materials as meeting expectations for quality. Wilson cites ESSA-level studies showing students more likely to meet benchmarks.
