Best of the web
24 best free sources of books and read-alouds online
You do not need to pay a monthly fee to keep a child in books. Between your public library's apps, nonprofit digital libraries and free read-aloud videos, there are more good children's books online for free than any family can read. This list starts with library apps, then covers free picture-book libraries in many languages, classic books, audio stories and read-aloud videos. Paper books still matter most for young kids, so we included two ways to get real books at home for free.
We chose sources that are free to read in full, not just samples, and checked each one in October 2026. Library apps depend on your local library, so collections vary. Checked 2026-10-24. Nobody paid to be here and nothing is an affiliate link.
