Buddy.ai is a voice-based app where an animated teacher named Buddy talks with young children to teach English, along with early literacy, math and science. The child speaks answers out loud, Buddy listens and responds, and lessons mix short cartoons, games and small talk. Lessons are sorted by age, from 3 to about 7. The company says it has more than 115 million downloads.

Our take: Engaging speaking practice for preschoolers learning English; privacy-minded parents should skip the recording consent or delete data regularly.

  • Subscription after the trial

Data and privacy

Before parent consent, speech is processed and deleted right away. With consent, voice recordings and transcripts are stored on Google Cloud, used to personalize lessons and improve Buddy's speech recognition and replies, and audio is auto-deleted only after 15 years unless the parent deletes it. Buddy says it complies with COPPA and is kidSAFE certified. Read the privacy policy.
