Chrome Music Lab

Desk research from the maker's own pages. Not yet tried by us. Checked 2026-10-24.
A free set of hands-on browser music experiments. The best known, Song Maker, lets kids build melodies and beats on a grid and share them as a link; others explore rhythm, sound and pitch. There is no account; kids just open an experiment and play. Many music teachers use it to connect sound with math, science and art. It works best in Chrome.
Our take: A safe, free first stop for music play at any age; look elsewhere if you specifically want AI music tools.
Checked in a browser
A browser check on 2026-10-25: what loads, the ads and trackers we saw, and what a child meets first. Not a hands-on test.
| Child safety: 4 out of 5 | No ads or chat; the checked page links out to GitHub, Twitter, Wikipedia and W3C. |
|---|---|
| Data: 4 out of 5 | Only Google Analytics/Tag Manager were contacted. |
| Ease: 2 out of 5 | The address checked was the About page, a wall of text; the experiments themselves were not on screen (the main page needs its own check). |
| Cost honesty: 5 out of 5 | Free; the page says no account is needed. |
What we found
- The check landed on musiclab.chromeexperiments.com/About, not the experiments page.
- 7 third-party hosts on 5 sites; 2 cookies, none from a third party.
- 0 ad frames.
- Links out to 7 sites, including github.com, twitter.com and wikipedia.org.
From the test: No ads and only Google Analytics; this check saw the About page, so a child would need help to reach the music experiments.

| What its terms say about age | No account needed. Google's Terms apply: anyone under the age to manage their own Google Account needs a parent's or guardian's permission, and the parent is responsible for the child's use. (terms) |

Watch for
- Not really an AI tool, despite often being listed as one
- Shared song links are public to anyone with the link
- Works best in Chrome
Data and privacy
No account is needed. Links only to Google's general Privacy Policy; nothing child-specific stated. Read the privacy policy.
Does it work?
One small 2023 development study found teachers and respondents rated Song Maker easy, useful and fun for remote music lessons; it measured satisfaction, not learning gains.
