Ello is a phone and tablet app that listens while a young child reads aloud. It catches misread words, coaches the child, and adjusts the next session. The app has more than 1,200 decodable books, early math, short daily quests, and books the child can invent with AI help. It is built for ages 5 to 9. The current app, Ello 2.0, is free to start, with a paid Unlimited plan.
Our take: A strong fit for a beginning reader age 5-8 whose parent is comfortable with voice recording; families wanting no microphone use or several kids on one plan should look elsewhere.
| Ages it suits | about 5-9 (grades K-5 per the app listing) |

| What its terms say about age | Under 18 may use it only with and under the supervision of a parent or guardian, who sets it up and gives consent (verifiable parental consent during sign-up). (terms) |
| Price | Free, with paid extras. Free daily reading and math activities; the paid Ello Unlimited plan is sold in the app and its price is not listed on the website (Oct 2026). Subscriptions renew automatically, and paid periods are not refunded. |

| The AI in it | Speech recognition listens to the child read and checks pronunciation, a large language model chats with the child about books, and some stories and pictures are made with AI. |
What's good
- Listens to real read-aloud practice instead of tap-only games
- Large decodable library built on phonics
- No ads and no in-app item sales
- Clear AI safety page and opt-in for model training
Watch for
- Needs the microphone and sends transcripts to outside AI providers
- Free tier is limited; full progress reports need Unlimited
- App reviews say Ello 2.0 supports one child per account and charges per child
- Safety system may flag sessions and keep them for years
Data and privacy
The app records the child's voice to judge reading; raw audio is kept 30 days (up to 5 years if a session is flagged for safety), transcripts go to outside AI model providers, and kids' data trains Ello's own models only if a parent opts in. Ello says it follows COPPA, does not sell data, and shows no ads in the app. Read the privacy policy.
Does it work?
No independent study of Ello found. The maker points to Bloom's 1984 research on one-to-one tutoring and to parent testimonials, not to a study of the app itself.
