Gaggle Safety Management

Warning: read this before you buy or sign up. Checked 2026-10-24.

Gaggle is student-monitoring software that K-12 districts run on school accounts and devices. AI scans the files and messages students create in school tools, and reads text typed into searches, AI chatbots, forms and drafts in Chrome, Edge and Safari, even if never sent. It flags signs of suicide, self-harm, violence, bullying, explicit images and guns; human reviewers check each flag before alerting school staff. We mark it a caution: a 2025 AP investigation found frequent false alarms, outed LGBTQ students and exposed student documents.

Our take: A serious surveillance tool districts choose, not parents; find out if your school uses it and what students are told.

What's good

  • Human review before alerts reach staff
  • 24/7 coverage including nights and weekends
  • Districts report students reached in a crisis

Watch for

  • Reads everything typed, even unsent drafts and AI chats
  • Also covers school accounts used on home devices
  • False alarms and outing risks reported by journalists
  • Parents usually cannot opt out; ask your district

Data and privacy

The school shares student emails and optionally names, addresses and parent contacts; Gaggle sees student writing and images, records approximate location through its browser extension, reports explicit images of possible minors to NCMEC and may report some cases to police. It says it does not sell data or show ads. Read the privacy policy.

Does it work?

A 2025 AP and Seattle Times investigation found many false alarms, cases where LGBTQ students were outed, and nearly 3,500 unredacted student documents exposed through Gaggle screenshot links released in a records request; Gaggle later locked links after 72 hours.
