A setup option that turns a cellular Apple Watch into a child's own phone-on-the-wrist, managed from a parent's iPhone. The child gets their own number and Apple Account. They can call and text contacts the parent approves, use Siri, track workouts, and press Emergency SOS. Parents see location in Find My, get arrive and leave alerts, set a Schooltime schedule that locks apps, and approve App Store downloads with Ask to Buy.
Our take: Good for iPhone families who want a phone alternative with strong contact controls; cheaper kids' watches exist if you only need calls and location.
| Ages it suits | kids who don't have their own iPhone; no set age |
|---|---|
| What its terms say about age | Set up by a parent from their own iPhone; a child under 13 gets a Child Account inside the parent's Family Sharing group, created with parental consent. Location is shared with the whole family by default when set up this way. (terms) |
| Price | Paid. Needs a GPS + Cellular Apple Watch (Series 4 or later; Apple suggests SE 3) plus a carrier plan. Apple lists the SE 3 GPS model at $249 new; cellular costs more (Oct 2026). |
| Works on | A device, iPhone and iPad |
| Account | A parent's account |
| Ads | None |
| In-app purchases | None |
| The AI in it | Siri answers spoken questions and dictates messages; no other AI. |
What's good
- Parent-approved contacts only
- Schooltime locks apps during class
- Location and arrive/leave alerts
- No separate kids' app to install
Watch for
- Needs a parent iPhone and a monthly cellular plan
- Costly hardware for a young child
- App Store and Siri reach more than a basic kids' watch
- Location shared with every family member by default
Data and privacy
Same Apple children's disclosure as Screen Time: no personalized or contextual Apple ads on child accounts. If location sharing is on at setup, the child's precise location is shared with every family member; Schooltime unlocks are sent to Apple end-to-end encrypted. Read the privacy policy.
