Snapchat (Family Center)

By Snap Inc.. Visit Snapchat (Family Center)

Desk research from the maker's own pages. Not yet tried by us. Checked 2026-10-24.

A camera-first messaging app where Snaps and chats disappear by default, with Stories, short videos, Snap Map and the built-in My AI chatbot. For 13 to 17 year olds, contact is limited to friends and phone contacts, location sharing is off by default and only with friends, and teens cannot change their birthday. Family Center lets a parent see the teen's friends and who they chatted with in the last seven days, without reading messages, request their location, set Place Alerts, limit sensitive content and stop My AI from replying.

Our take: Only for teens 13+ with Family Center linked and location settings checked; skip for younger children.

Data and privacy

Snap's privacy policy (updated Sept 21, 2026) lists what people share with its AI features, including My AI, as collected data, along with camera, microphone and precise location information depending on settings. Parents in Family Center see contacts, not chat content. Read the privacy policy.

Does it work?

Snap's own SEC filing says US state attorneys general have sued it since January 2024 over harmful content, child safety and data collection, with trials in Nevada and New Mexico set for August 2027, and that Snap settled the first Los Angeles bellwether addiction trials confidentially. Pennsylvania sued in August 2026 claiming Snap misstated its content to win a 13+ app-store rating. No independent study of Family Center was found.
