Sora is OverDrive's reading app for schools. Students find their school, sign in with school credentials, and borrow ebooks and audiobooks from the school's digital collection, including titles teachers assign. The app keeps a running tally of time spent reading and books finished. Students can highlight, take notes and export them, look up words and review the list later, and earn achievements. Popular titles can have wait lists, just as at a library.
Our take: If your child's school uses it, it is a safe, ad-free way to read assigned and free-choice books at home; there is nothing to buy as a family.

| What its terms say about age | No OverDrive account is needed; students sign in through their school. OverDrive's children's privacy policy says children under 13 may not create an OverDrive account, and its terms say account holders must be at least 13. (terms) |

What's good
- Free for students at subscribing schools
- Notes, highlights and word lookup
- Reading time tally
- No reviews or social sharing
Watch for
- Only works if the school buys a collection
- Wait lists for popular titles
- Collects device ID and reading activity
- Achievements and tallies can turn reading into a numbers game
Data and privacy
OverDrive's children's privacy policy (July 2026) says it never sells a child's information and collects reading activity, bookmarks, notes, IP address and device ID to run the service. It says public reviews and social sharing are not part of Sora and that it follows FERPA for student records. Read the privacy policy.
