23 best free sites for kids to learn coding
Even with AI that can write code, learning to code still teaches kids how to break a problem down, test ideas and fix mistakes. And kids who understand code are better at checking what AI gives them. Every pick here is free or has a generous free path. Start with picture blocks (ScratchJr, Scratch, Code.org) and move to typed code around age 10-12. Two picks let kids build with AI, which is the most useful skill of 2026: not asking AI to do it, but understanding how it works.
We chose free, maintained coding tools with a clear learning path and checked each one in October 2026. We left out tools that have closed and noted paid upsells. Checked 2026-10-24. Nobody paid to be here and nothing is an affiliate link.
