The Smart Dictionary Pen is a handheld scanner from Chinese AI company iFLYTEK. A student slides it over a printed word or sentence in a textbook, book or worksheet, and the screen shows the definition, example sentences and a recorded pronunciation, or translates the text into one of about 21 languages. It can also score a learner's English pronunciation. English word lookup works offline; translation needs a connection. iFLYTEK also sells an AI Learning Machine tablet for children in China.

Our take: Handy for older kids reading in a second language; parents who care about data and company ties may prefer a phone dictionary app.
