Nanit Smart Baby Monitor

Desk research from the maker's own pages. Not yet tried by us. Checked 2026-10-24.

Nanit is an overhead HD camera for a baby's crib, with a phone app for parents. It streams live video and sound, sends alerts for crying, coughing and motion, and uses computer vision to track sleep and, with patterned Breathing Wear, breathing motion. Paid plans add saved video history, sleep analysis, milestone tracking and time-lapses. Nanit says it is not a medical device and does not prevent SIDS. The child is a baby; parents and caregivers use the app.

Our take: Suits parents who want sleep data and are comfortable with a cloud camera over the crib; families wary of video leaving the home or of subscriptions should pick a local-only monitor.

The AI in itComputer vision analyzes the crib video to score sleep, track breathing motion and estimate height.

What's good

  • Breathing tracking without a sensor on the baby
  • Encrypted video stream; staff access limited
  • Live video works without a paid plan
  • Up to several caregivers can share access

Watch for

  • Crib video is sent to Nanit's cloud
  • Most insights need a yearly subscription
  • Shares data for targeted advertising
  • Not a medical device; alerts can be wrong

Data and privacy

Nanit collects video and audio of the crib, room temperature and humidity, the baby's name, birth date, gender and photos, plus care logs. Its policy (updated Oct 21, 2026) says it does not sell data but does share information with third parties for cross-context behavioral advertising, and uses de-identified data for analyses it may publish. Read the privacy policy.

Does it work?

The maker's own claims only; no independent study of Nanit's accuracy was found. Nanit itself says false positive or false negative breathing readings are possible and it is not meant to diagnose or prevent SIDS.
