Skye is a spoken AI maths tutor that UK schools buy for pupils in Years 3-6, Year 7 and GCSE; a US site also exists. A pupil joins a one-to-one lesson on a shared whiteboard with an audio connection and talks through problems out loud while Skye guides them through the company's own lesson slides. Teachers schedule sessions and see progress and attendance. Third Space Learning ran human online tutoring from 2013 and now delivers it by AI.

Our take: A reasonable option for schools wanting extra maths practice at scale, as long as they accept recorded lessons; parents cannot buy it directly.

The AI in itSkye listens to the pupil, transcribes speech live and talks back to guide them through fixed lesson slides; it does not generate its own lesson content.

What's good

  • Lots of one-to-one maths talk time for a flat school fee
  • Sticks to set lesson content
  • Says AI vendors cannot train on pupil data

Watch for

  • Every lesson's audio is recorded and kept for years
  • Independent trial of the earlier version found no gains
  • Speaking aloud may be hard for shy pupils or noisy rooms
  • Only through schools

Data and privacy

The school shares each pupil's name, age, gender, year group and maths level. Every lesson is recorded (screen and the spoken conversation with Skye, plus transcripts, no face video), kept until the end of the third school year after the pupil stops, and may be shared with researchers; third-party AI models may not train on student data. Read the privacy policy.

Does it work?

An Education Endowment Foundation randomized trial of the earlier human-tutor version (2014-15, 578 Year 6 pupils) found no impact on maths results (effect size -0.03); a 2022 NatCen evaluation could not measure impact because of Covid. For Skye, the maker cites an Educate Ventures evaluation showing correct answers rising from 30% to 70% within one lesson.
