Storyline Online is a free video library where well-known actors read picture books aloud while the illustrations are animated on screen. It is run by the SAG-AFTRA Foundation, the charity of the actors' union, and has won an Emmy. Each book comes with a free activity guide for teachers and parents. Children simply pick a book and watch, on the website, the free app, or YouTube.
Our take: A lovely free read-aloud option for young kids, best used on the website or app rather than YouTube itself.
Checked in a browser
A browser check on 2026-10-25: what loads, the ads and trackers we saw, and what a child meets first. Not a hands-on test.
| Child safety: 4 out of 5 | No ads or chat; links to app stores and social media (Facebook, X, YouTube, Instagram) in the footer. |
|---|---|
| Data: 4 out of 5 | Only Google Analytics/Tag Manager were contacted (a Vimeo cookie was also set for the video player). |
| Ease: 4 out of 5 | Large book covers with the reader's name; a young child can tap a book, though the carousel arrows are small. |
| Cost honesty: 4 out of 5 | Free; a red 'Donate' button sits under the logo and there is a Subscribe link. |
