The Light Phone

A minimalist phone with a black-and-white E-ink style screen and no web browser, social media, email or app store. It makes calls and texts (including group texts) and adds simple tools, such as directions, chosen from a password-protected web dashboard. The Light Phone III adds a camera; the Light Flip is a flip-style model. Some parents use it as a first phone instead of a smartphone.

Our take: A calm first phone for families who want calls and texts without the internet; families who need location tracking or contact limits should look at a kids' phone with parental controls.
