Google's smart speakers and displays are moving from Google Assistant to Gemini for Home, a generative AI voice assistant. A parent adds a child with a supervised (Family Link) account to the home, trains their Voice Match, and then filters music, video and Gemini answers and schedules Downtime in the Google Home app. Kids ask questions, play music and set timers by voice. Google warns the filters are not perfect and that kids should be told Gemini is not a person.

Our take: Usable for families who already supervise accounts in Family Link and want to set limits; parents wary of kids chatting with AI should keep Gemini off.

  • Open-ended AI chat by voice in shared rooms
  • Filters can miss things; kids can cast restricted content from a phone
  • Early-access rollout, features vary by country
  • Some features need a monthly subscription

Data and privacy

Covered by Google's notice for Family Link accounts: voice recordings may be stored if Voice & Audio Activity is on, and queries to Gemini are collected. Google says the Gemini Keep Activity setting is unavailable to users under 13 and that minors do not get personalized ads. Read the privacy policy.

Does it work?

The maker's own claims only. Google's own help pages warn that Gemini can make things up and that its filters for minors are not perfect.
